A Walk Through McCloud, California

Photos by Robert S. Gardner

Last year, December 1997, I attended a conference held in this small town in far northern California. McCloud sits at the foot of the mighty Mt. Shasta and was once a booming logging town. McCloud started as a company town built around the turn of the century by the McCloud River Lumber Company.  Although the company is no longer in operation, many of the original buildings still stand and the town is getting a second life as a quaint tourist destination. The railroad that once brought lumber out of the area now takes visitors on sightseeing runs. McCloud is about 300 miles (6 hours) north of San Francisco off of Interstate 5.
