The Sisters of Tala, Philippines

Photos by Robert Gardner

During one of my trips to the Philippines, I visited an aunt who is a nun in a Franciscan religious order. At the time, she worked in a convent near the town of Tala just north of Manila. The sisters operated a nursery and worked with patients and their families at a hospital nearby. The government-run hospital specializes in treatment of Hansen's disease. Several religious groups provide health and spiritual care and other services.
