Pope John Paul II in Baguio City

     In 1981 I was in Baguio City preparing for journeys to Sagada, Banaue, and to climb Mt. Pulog. It just happened to be at the same time that Pope John Paul II was making his historic first visit to the Philippines which included the summer capital. I watched for several days as the city's Burnham Park was being prepared and the excitement grew. 

     In the early morning of the Pope's arrival, I was awakened by what I thought was the soft pattering of rain on the street below. When I went out on the balcony it was dry and the pattering was from the feet of hundreds of people making their way by candlelight to the city park. I quickly grabbed a camera and joined the pilgrimmage. Here are a few photos from that eventful day.
